With advances in technology now enabling fabulous, talented authors to self-publish there has, of course, been a burgeoning of Self-published Author Awards! Having undertaken some research for one of our clients on just this subject we thought we’d share with you some of the ones that really resonated with us. Be warned – there are others and we found https://insights.bookbub.com/book-awards/ to be a particularly useful site so hit it up to read about others! In the meantime here’s our starter for ten!
Eric Hoffer Book Award
Deadline: 21st January 2021
The Eric Hoffer Book Awards honours the memory of the great American philosopher Eric Hoffer by highlighting salient writing as well as the independent spirit of small publishers. Since its inception, the Hoffer has become one of the largest international book awards for small, academic and independent presses.
A grand prize of $2,500 is awarded annually. In addition, Eric Hoffer Book Award honours include various prizes within 18 categories. A single category registration qualifies a book for all prize considerations.
Registration is open all year long and the annual postmark deadline is January 21st for each award year. There is a discount registration fee available for submissions postmarked December 14th or sooner ($60 rising to $65 after December 14th).
The Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award
Deadline: 31st January 2021 TBC
Their website says, “Thousands of books are entered each your and our panel of over 100 librarians and booksellers take part in the judging, narrowing it down to a group of finalists and winners that represent the best books, all independently published, in 55 categories”.
Their entry fee is $99 for the first category and $79 for subsequent categories.
The Next Generation INDIE Book Awards
Deadline: 12th February 2021
These awards boast of being the largest international awards programme for indie authors and independent publishers and there are over 70 categories to choose from.
Cash prizes are available ($1,500 cash prize and trophy are awarded to the best fiction and nonfiction book, $750 to the runner up and $500 for the author placed third plus $100 to the winner of each of the 70 categories). In addition all winners will be listed in the next Generation INDIE Book awards Catalogue which is distributed to thousands of book buyers, media and others each year. Winners are also listed on their website for a year and are invited to attend their Gala Awards Reception. Plus up to 70 books are sent to be reviewed by New York literary agent Marilyn Allen of Allen O’Shea Literary Agency.
Two copies of the book (plus one additional copy for each additional category entered) are required. Entry is online. Entry fee $75 for first category, $60 for subsequent categories
The INDIEReader Discovery Awards
Deadline: 15th February 2021
There are two main categories – fiction and nonfiction – and 40+ sub categories!
Standard entry $149 for your first entry with a $50 fee for each additional category entered. You will also need to submit three copies of each title for the first category entered and one for each additional category thereafter (this only applies to those who have gifted a book via Amazon or another service). Books will not be returned.
First place in fiction and nonfiction win $500 cash prize, a one hour, tailored consultation session with a publicist from Smith Publicity and a custom author website and one year of hosting and management from Featherlight.
To the top three winners they get $250 cash prize, print and eBook title setup with market access from IngramSpark, a professional INDIEReader review, a first look consideration with an eye to representation from Dystel, Goderich and Bourret Literary Management.
The New INDIE Excellence Awards
Deadline: 31st March 2021
The National Indie Excellence Awards (NIEA) are open to all English language printed books available for sale including small presses, mid-size independent publishers, University presses and self-published authors.
It costs $75 per category to enter and one copy of your book must be sent in. Your title must have an ISBN number and be available to buy on Amazon / wherever good books are sold. Winners and finalists will be notified in May 2021.
Rubery Book Awards
Deadline: 31st March 2021
The Rubery Prize is a prestigious international book award seeking the best books by indie writers, self-published authors and books published by independent presses, judged by reputable judges. The Rubery Prize is based in the UK.
Your entry must be a book that is either self-published or published by an independent press. Authors and publishers can enter a book.
Entry is online and the organisers decide which categories will be represented once they have received all the entries. You will be required to send in a copy of your book.
There are prizes! Book of the Year wins £150 and category winners £150. Every winner receives a glass plaque and all winners and shortlisted authors receive a write up. Entry costs £37.
Writer’s Digest Self-published Book Awards
Deadline: 2nd June 2021 TBC (early bird deadline – 10th April 2021 TBC)
One Grand prize winner will receive $8,000 in cash, a feature article about you and your book in the March issue of Writer’s Digest and a paid trip to the Writer’s Digest Annual Conference, including a coveted Pitch Slam slot.
One First Prize Winner in each category will receive $1,000 in cash and promotion in the March issue of Writer’s Digest,
The early bird fee is $99 for the first entry and $85 for each additional entry. The later deadline entry fee is $125 for the first entry and $95 for each additional entry. A full, bound copy of your book must be submitted to the awards (who are based in America).
Pen Open Book Awards
Deadline: 15th August 2021 TBC
The PEN Open Book Award, formerly the Beyond Margins Awards, invites submissions of book-length writings by authors of colour, published in the United States during the current calendar year. Works of fiction, literary nonfiction, biography/memoir, poetry and other works of literary character are strongly preferred. Beginning in the 2021 award cycle the award will confer a $10,000 prize upon an author of colour. U.S. residency or citizenship is not required.
Submissions for the 2021 cycle will be accepted between 15th June – 15th August 2021 TBC.
The entry fee is $85 but this may be waived for publishers whose annual net sales are less than $2 million.
The Best INDIE Book Award
Deadline: 1st October 2021
The annual Best Indie Book Award (or BIBA) is an international literary contest recognising outstanding indie authors. Entries are limited to independently (indie) published books including those from small presses, e-book publishers and self-published authors. All submissions must be written in English.
The 2021 BIBA Literary Contest submissions opens on 1st January 2021 and all winners will be announced by 30th December 2021.
Entry cost $50 per book in 2020.
